Physics interprete natural phenomena and have historically served as the basis for the development of science and technology in general. Physics deal with elementary particles and their interrelations as well as with atoms, molecules and the structure of matter.

The Department's Profile

The Physics Department, founded in 1970, is currently involved in all aspects of Physical Sciences (Theoretical, Experimental and Applied) both educationally and research-wise. There are adequate lecture rooms, fully equipped laboratories, a well-organised library, 51 academic staff members and 25 members of technical and administrative staff.

Studies

An average of 1000 hundred undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students currently study at the Physics Department. Our undergraduate programme is based upon compulsory core courses on classical and modern Physics, in addition to extensive training on calculative tools and methodology. Optional courses organised in thematic course groups allow students to expand their studies to related scientific branches, such as Astrophysics, Meteorology-Climatology, Environmental Studies, Electronic Technology, Telecommunications, Photonics, New Materials.

For further studies and specilisation, 5 postgraduate programmes are currently on and available.

Work prospects

Apart from working as teachers of Physics, Physics graduates can be employed in

• universities and research centres in Greece and abroad
• physics-related institutes, organisations and associations
• the public and private sectors, especially in modern technology oriented domains
